Geographic Information systems are also used as map making software and in various parts of the map making process. GIS mapping software enables a user to map their results visually.
The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has begun to conduct comprehensive evaluations on the Phase II Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) program. The DEC evaluation is being conducted to determine the overall success in meeting the conditions and requirements contained within your permit. The NYS DEC has stated that their intentions are to audit ALL municipalities within the upcoming five year permit period.
To assist in the evaluation of this Phase II MS4 evaluation, the DEC would like each Town to have (among a list of others) a map showing the Town’s receiving waters, basins, segments and out falls.
We have been working with Municipalities to help fulfill the mapping requirements of the MS4 permit. We are preparing drawings in a dynamic ArcView, GIS format. With the GIS format, these maps may have attributes assigned that indicate the following:
Adjacent MS4s.
A list of current construction sites in the Town MS4 area.
A list of storm water inspections conducted.
Illicit discharge findings at specified outfalls.
Schedule of maintenance and cleaning.
The information published on-line is an excellent way to keep the entire municipality up to date with current conditions.
The DEC SPDES permit annual report questions the format of the municipalities’ outfall and storm water conveyance system maps. Their preference is a GIS prepared in ArcView.
We would be happy to meet with you to discuss the GIS mapping needs for your Town.
